After a Facebook live video went viral showing a warehouse filled with emergency supplies from Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez fired the director of the office of emergency management Carlos Acevedo.

Pallets of water, food, medicine, baby diapers, baby formula, wipes, cots, awnings, and more had been sitting in the massive warehouse since 2017.

The scene at the warehouse became chaotic as people showed up in droves to distribute water, baby diapers, food, and other items to those affected by the recent earthquake, reported the Associated Press.

On Thursday, Department of Housing and Urban Development agreed to release $8.2 billion more in aid to Puerto Rico after the funds were held over concerns of mismanagement.

“Now that proper financial controls are in place, implementing the second phase of Puerto Rico’s disaster recovery program can move forward with an extension to its line of credit,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson in a statement.

President Trump has been vocal about his concerns of Puerto Rico’s mismanagement of aid and the corruption of government officials. The president said Governor Ricardo Rosselló did a “terrible job,” and called San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz “incompetent.”

After massive protests for nearly two weeks demanding Rosselló resign because of leaked chats and corruption, he finally left office in late July 2019. Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Justice Wanda Vázquez Garced took his place as governor.

In June, the FBI arrested two former high-ranking Puerto Rico officials – Julia Keleher, who was the secretary of state of public education, and Ángela Ávila-Marrero, who lead the island’s Health Insurance Administration– for allegedly steering over $15 million in federal fund to businesses in an attempt to defraud the U.S. government.

A lot of people owe President Trump an apology.

Why would these emergency supplies be sitting in a warehouse for the last 2 years when the citizens of Puerto Rico desparately needed them?
