In his speech to the nation on Wednesday morning following Iran’s missile attack on the Iraqi military base that hosts U.S. troops, President Trump promised, “As long as I am President of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.”

The president confirmed that no Americans or Iraqis were hurt in Iran’s attack and only minimal damage occurred at the military base because of the precautions that were taken.

He spoke of “Iran’s destructive and destabilizing behavior” that has been tolerated by nations in the Middle East dating back to 1979, and stated “those days are over.”

“At my direction, the United States military eliminated the world’s top terrorist, Qasem Soleimani. As the head of the Quds Force, Soleimani was personally responsible for some of the absolutely worst atrocities,” said President Trump, before describing the violence caused by the merciless bloodstained fanatic.“He trained terrorist armies, including Hezbollah, launching terrorist strikes against civilian targets. He fueled bloody civil wars all across the region. He viciously wounded and murdered thousands of U.S. troops, including the planting of roadside bombs that maim and dismember their victims.”

The president went on to mention Soleimani was behind the recent attack on U.S. personnel in Iraq that left one American dead and wounded four service members, as well as the attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

“By removing Soleimani, we have sent a powerful message to terrorists: If you value your own life, you will not threaten the lives of our people.”

He reminded Americans what Iran has done in the past months leading up to the dronestrike that killed Soleimani; seizing ships in international waters, firing a strike on Saudi Arabia, and shooting down two drones that belonged to the U.S.

President Trump criticized the Iran nuclear deal brokered under the Obama administration, “Iran’s hostilities substantially increased after the foolish Iran nuclear deal was signed in 2013, and they were given $150 billion, not to mention $1.8 billion in cash. Instead of saying thank you to the United States, they chanted ‘death to America.’ In fact, they chanted ‘death to America’ the day the agreement was signed.”

Trump mentioned Iran’s “terror spree” in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, Iran, and Afghanistan” and the missiles fired last night” were all funded by the “previous administration.”

The president said he would ask NATO “to become much more involved in the Middle East process.”

He said that even though the U.S. has a “great military and equipment” doesn’t mean we have to use it.

The president addressed Iranian citizens and leaders with an olive branch, “We want you to have a future and a great future. One that you deserve, one of prosperity at home, and harmony with the nations of the world. The United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it.”
