Just 48 hours after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei challenged President Trump on Twitter by writing “you can’t do anything,” Qassem Soleimani was killed in by a U.S. drone strike ordered by President Trump.

President Trump wrote, “Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is a not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year!”

Khamenei replied to President Trump’s tweet on New Year’s Day, “That guy has tweeted that we see Iran responsible for the events in Baghdad & we will respond to Iran. 1st: You can’t do anything. 2nd: If you were logical —which you’re not— you’d see that your crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan… have made nations hate you.”

Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ hit Quds Force, was behind the recent attacks on coalition bases in Iraq and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans and their allies.

President Trump ordered the airstrike at the Baghdad International’s Airport that killed Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the head deputy of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces.

At least two missiles were fired by a US MQ9 Reaper drone, killing Soleimani and others in the vehicles as they departed the Baghdad airport. Soleimani’s body was charred and torn apart but was identified by his ring.

Khamenei announced three days of public morning for the Iranian major general and vowed vengeance for Soleimani’s death.

Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani tweeted, “The flag of General Soleimani in defense of the country’s territorial integrity and the fight against terrorism and extremism in the region will be raised, and the path of resistance to US excesses will continue. The great nation of Iran will take revenge for this heinous crime.”

The Pentagon called the airstrike an act of defense to deter future Iranian attacks, in a statement: “General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region…  The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”

Soleimani’s death came days after the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad by pro-Iran militants and tension between the Islamic regime in Tehran and the U.S.

On Fox & Friends, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) answered the question, “how significant is this?”

“We killed the most powerful man in Iran short of the Ayatollah. He was the right fist of the Ayatollah and we took the Ayatollah’s arm off,” said Sen. Graham.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated, “I think the Iranian leadership understands President Trump will take action. … We made very clear that these responses would be swift and decisive. We have now demonstrated that.”

On Thursday evening, Pompeo tweeted a video showing Iraqis celebrating the death of Soleimani by taking to the streets.

Soleimani’s death raised concerns with Democrats that the act would put the U.S. on a path for a new conflict in the Middle East.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) took to social media to tell his followers that Congress didn’t authorize the airstrike and warned of “almost inevitable escalation and increased risk.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said the airstrike that killed Soleimani “risks provoking further dangerous escalation of violence.”

On Friday morning, Pelosi tweeted, “The Trump Admin has conducted strikes in Iraq targeting high-level Iranian military officials and killing Iranian Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani without an AUMF against Iran. Further, this action was taken without the consultation of the Congress.”

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton cheered the Trump administration for the airstrike by tweeting, “Congratulations to all involved in eliminating Qassem Soleimani. Long in the making, this was a decisive blow against Iran’s malign Quds Force activities worldwide. Hope this is the first step to regime change in Tehran.”

President Trump delivered a statement on Friday.
