Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney announced he will obey the White House orders and refuse refuse to cooperate with the House impeachment inquiry. This conflicts with his earlier plans to file a lawsuit asking the courts to decide whether he should listen listen to the president or Congress.

In a statement Tuesday, Mulvaney’s lawyers said “Mr. Mulvaney does not intend to pursue litigation regarding the deposition subpoena issued to him by the U.S. House of Representatives. Rather, he will rely on the direction of the President, as supported by an opinion of the Office of Legal Counsel of the U.S. Department of Justice, in not appearing for the relevant deposition.”

This is a victory for President Trump who is fighting against the House of Representatives Democratic witch hunt for impeachment. Mulvaney is a key figure for Democrats since he is the one who announced that the U.S. would be holding Ukraine aid funds due to political corruption.

President Trump has said he does not want Mulvaney to testify “Because I don’t want to give credibility to a corrupt witch hunt”. Democrats most likely have no recourse here because the subpoena they presented Mulvaney is unenforceable. This is both because of Mulvaney’s position as well as the fact it was presented in an unreasonable time manner, just hours before Democrats wanted him to testify.
