Former NFL player Edawn Louis Coughman was arrested on Thursday for allegedly vandalizing his own Atlanta business and making it appear as a hate crime.

Atlanta police stated Coughman was charged with reporting a false crime, insurance fraud, and concealing a license plate.

Coughman, who played for the Washington Redskins, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Arizona Cardinals, “conjured a premeditated plan to damage his own property, attempt to make it appear as a hate crime, file a claim with his insurance company, and sell off the undamaged appliances and electronics,” according to the Atlanta police.

The police responded to a call about someone vandalizing Coughman’s business, Create & Bake Pizza and Coughman’s Creamery. The caller also reported seeing the suspect drive a black car without a license plate.

Police officers saw Coughman driving the described car in the area. The officers also noticed “several televisions in the bed of the truck and inside the cab,” and some of the televisions were “still attached to the brackets with damaged drywall.”

When the police entered Coughman’s business they saw “racially motivated words,” swastikas and the word “MAGA” spray painted on the walls, yellow pry marks, and “booth cushions were sliced open” along with “broken mirrors, cut wires, and a damaged video surveillance system.”

A yellow crow bar and black spray paint was found in Coughman’s vehicle after he was arrested.
