On Friday, Rep. Erica Thomas went live on Twitter explaining what happened to her over the weekend at a Publix grocery store in Mableton, Georgia. Thomas sobbed while explaining that as she was in the checkout lane, she was told to “go back where you came from,” by a white man because she had too many items in the express lane.

“People are getting really out of control with this, with this white privilege,” Thomas claimed in the video. “People need to see the hate that is going on in this country. The hate is real.” She explains that she was afraid to leave the grocery store for fear that the man would stalk her or “take out a gun.”

The lawmaker has plenty of support from followers who began using the hashtag #IStandWithErica after seeing her emotional video.

Thomas, who holds the position as Minority Caucus Vice Chair, is seeking re-election as a member of the House of Representatives in District 39.

On Saturday, Thomas was waiting to be interviewed by Christian Jennings of Channel 2 Action News, when Eric Sparkes, the man who she accused of verbally attacking her, showed up outside of Publix.
