Back in 2016, Soccer player Megan Rapinoe started kneeling during the national anthem claiming it as a support of the Black Lives Matter movement and against white supremacy. Later, Rapinoe stated she was protesting against the treatment of homosexuals in the U.S.

Last week, the co-captain of the U.S. women’s soccer team said her anthem kneeling was her way of saying “fuck you to Trump” and his racism. Rapinoe was interviewed by Henry Bushnell with Yahoo Sports in May before she departed for the Women’s World Cup tournament in France. Rapinoe said she doesn’t support the federation’s decision to require soccer players to “stand and honor the flag.”

She justified her actions saying, “I feel like it’s kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it because I’m as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don’t get to tell me if I can be here or not.”

Rapinoe continued while bashing President Trump’s physical appearance: “So it’s kind of a good ‘F you’ to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the administration might have towards people who don’t look exactly like him. Which, God help us if we all looked like him. Scary. Really scary. Ahh, disturbing.”

In an interview with Fox News, President Trump said, “You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there, maybe they shouldn’t be in the country.” The president believes the NFL owners made the right move to ban kneeling. “I think the people pushed it forward. This was not me. This country is very smart. We have very smart people,” he said. Trump does object to the provision that allows team players to stay in the locker room until after the anthem, but overall thinks the rule is good.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted to Rapino Friday, inviting her and the other players to tour the House of Representatives. Rapinoe replied, “Consider it done.”
