California Governor Gavin Newsom has turned into an anti-vaxxer, promising that he would not use the vaccine for the coronavirus developed by the federal government. On Monday, the governor told reporters that he would not distribute the vaccine to residents of his state even if it has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is the federal agency that regulates food products and drugs in the United States. Newsom is echoing what other Democrats are saying that the Trump administration cannot be trusted. But at the same time, they are also saying that the experts at the FDA cannot be trusted.

“A question I often get is: Are you going to take someone’s word for it as it relates to vaccines?” Newsom told the reporters. “Of course, we don’t take anyone’s word for it. We will do our own independently reviewed process with our world-class experts,” he added.

Newsom actually has a plan in place that would override the authority of the FDA. He has created an 11-member committee that would review the effectiveness of the vaccine. California is not the only state that plans to delay the distribution of the vaccine among its residents to conduct some independent testing on its own to just show that they are not going to trust the President on anything.

There are reports that the President’s hope that the vaccine is made available before the election will have little chance of being realized. Only a limited amount of the vaccine will be available by early 2021.

Newsom’s decision to review the efficacy of a vaccine that has been certified by the FDA is just a political move. California Health and Human Services spokeswoman Kate Folmar has given out a statement that points out how pointless the action is. “It is unlikely the state review panel would find that a vaccine authorized by the FDA is unsafe,” she said. “However, if that does happen, the state would inform residents about the safety hazard and limit the distribution of the vaccine in areas under state control.”

All that the review will do is delay the time that the vaccine can be given out to California citizens who might need it. Newsom is putting the lives of his constituents in danger to score political points.
