Despite months of delay for the new coronavirus relief deal, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave President Donald Trump a 48-hour ultimatum to settle their differences and come up with a bipartisan coronavirus stimulus deal.

While a number of Democrats urged Pelosi to concede and accept the administration’s $1.8 billion offer, the House Speaker instead went on her way to demand President Donald Trump to accept her overpriced $2.2 trillion stimulus package. The announcement was made by Drew Hammill, deputy chief of staff to Pelosi. In his tweet, Hammill wrote that the House Speaker conducted a lengthy meeting with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Saturday night to finally come up with a stimulus deal. The chief of staff wrote that while there might have been some positive news which has resulted from their discussion, Hammill confirmed that there are still several issues that the Republicans and the Democrats have yet to agree on.

Some of the developments include news about additional coronavirus testing and contact tracing, as well as providing aid to people of color who were disproportionately hit by the pandemic.

The chief of staff then warned, “as we go provision by provision that must be addressed in a comprehensive manner in the next 48 hours. Decisions must be made by the White House in order to demonstrate that the Administration is serious about reaching a bipartisan agreement.” Hammill wrote that the Republicans must concede in order to provide and address the needs of thousands of Americans who needed additional support in the time of the pandemic.

Unfortunately, the House Speaker’s ultimatum meant nothing, especially since she had also failed to approve the second round of coronavirus stimulus deal. As a result, American companies that were relying on the government’s paycheck protection program had to make drastic decisions to stay afloat. For example, companies such as the American Airlines had to lay off 19,000 workers because of Pelosi’s refusal to concede. Such sentiment was also reflected by the majority of Americans. In fact, a YouGov poll revealed that the public saw Pelosi as the culprit for the delay. According to the data, forty-three percent of Americans blamed Pelosi for the delay, while 40% blamed Trump. In terms of party affiliations, 45 percent of independents, 45% blamed Pelosi while just 30% blamed Trump.

The situation grew worse that even Democratic politicians have personally sent a message to Pelosi, urging her to accept the White House’s $1.8 billion coronavirus relief deal. In fact, 18 Democrats had already ruled against the House Speaker’s hefty $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief bill.

House Democrat Rep. Ben McAdams said in a statement that the Republicans had already placed a serious offer and that the Democrats must be able to settle the differences in order to “stay at the table and get this across the finish line.”

Another House Democrat, Rep. Cindy Axne, shared the same frustration. “This is going nowhere; we know it’s going nowhere. This is just a vote to make people feel good,” Axne said.
