Following the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Democratic supporters and politicians are using every power and influence in their arsenal to launch a smear campaign against the new Trump appointee.

Barrett, 48, describes herself as a strict “originalist,” someone who prioritizes the original text, over a more modern interpretation of the law. Democrats also feared that the judge’s conservative views and her strong Catholic faith might get in the way of advancing left-wing agenda, such as the Affordable HealthCare Act, or otherwise known as Obamacare.

While the Republicans have secured enough votes to ensure Barett’s nomination, Democrats continue to pull all the stops to influence Barrett’s appointment, including plans to boycott the upcoming Senate Supreme Court confirmation. While Democrats are finding ways to use “procedural weapons” over the nomination, some opted to go into a more political route, including questioning the judge’s nomination.

In fact, two Democrat senators, Hawaii’s Mazie Hirono and Connecticut’s Richard Blumenthal announced that they will not meet with the Supreme Court nominee. The two politicians claimed that meeting with Barrett will only “legitimize” Trump’s decision. On the other hand, Democrats planned to portray Barrett’s nomination as something that should have not happened at all.

In a social media post, Blumenthal wrote, “I will refuse to treat this process as legitimate & will not meet with Judge Amy Coney Barrett.” He explained that Barett’s views on certain issues such as the Affordable Healthcare Act might take away health care benefits for millions of Americans who are living with “pre-existing conditions.” In addition, Hirono also shared the same sentiment, stating that “I will not be meeting with her, I will take the opportunity to question her when she is under oath.”

On the other hand, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) relies on the argument about the Affordable Health Care Act to possibly swing the voters. However, the Republicans have already cemented their decision and are unlikely to offer any considerations. In fact, even if Democrats dissent Barrett’s nomination, the Republicans can still afford at least three defections from their own party before Vice President Mike Pence can cast his tie-breaking vote. Currently, Sen. Lindsey Graham confirmed that they plan to bring Barrett’s nomination to the Senate Judiciary Committee by October 12.

Even Hollywood stars are using their influence to undermine Barett. Stars such as actress Dian Warren described the Supreme Court nominee as “a hybrid of Aunt Lydia and a Stepford wife,” while award-winning actress Ellen Barkin noted that Barett was as stiff as a blackboard.

Comedian Adam Goldberg also chimed in, stating that the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would have returned from her grave, knowing that she was replaced by a conservative.

During her nomination, the President praised Barrett as a “She is a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials, and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution.”
