After experiencing a violent weekend, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot received a massive backlash in her failed efforts to protect her city, not just from looters and rioters but also from partygoers.

Lightfoot had served as Chicago’s first openly lesbian mayor, which seemed ironic given how much attention she had dedicated to publicly lash out against LGBTQ members.

On Saturday, Lightfoot blasted members of the LGBTQ community after she tweeted a photo of topless swimsuit-clad men in a party at Montrose Beach, near the city’s gay-friendly Boystown neighborhood.

The Chicago mayor wrote: “It’s called a pandemic, people. This reckless behavior on Montrose Beach is what will cause us to shut down the parks and lakefront.” She warned, “Don’t make us take steps backward.”

In another social media post, Lightfoot added that she had personally overseen the clearing of the party. In addition, the city had also put up a protective fence to discourage other beachgoers from visiting.

Others have criticized Lightfoot for personally dedicating her time and attention to a group of partygoers, while the rest of the city is left to deal with the violence and chaos. Over the weekend, looters ransacked the city’s Magnificent Mile and other retail districts. Rioters smashed store windows, looted several businesses, and attacked the police.

The rioters also encouraged people on social media to line up in a “caravan” of cars and engage in criminal activity. According to reports from USA Today, the city’s police department has already made 100 arrests following the violent incidents, while 13 other officers sustain injuries from the attacks. To de-escalate the situation, 400 police officers were dispatched in the area.

In a press conference, Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown reported that at a certain point, a civilian had attempted to shoot at police officers, and the officers returned fire. As a result, a security guard and a civilian were rushed to the hospital after they were hit by the gunfire. Both are in critical condition.

Brown believed that the riot was prompted by a social media post that accused the police of shooting a 15-year old boy. In reality, the police had injured a 20-year-old man who had a long criminal history. Brown believed that the incident was not an “organized protest,” but rather, a result of “pure criminality.”

Initially, Lightfoot told the media that she had made a “very robust plan” to protect the city and that they would not need the help of either the National Guard or the Trump administration to take control of the situation. “We do not need federal troops in Chicago. Period. Full stop.”
