In a recent notice to their students, the University of Georgia suggested that their students should wear a mask while having sex.

The notice reads, “consider wearing a face mask during sex. Heavy breathing and panting can further spread the virus, and wearing a mask can reduce the risk.” The notice also reminded students that they are their own “safest” sexual partners. With this, the University advised them to either “practice solo sex” or to limit the number of their sexual partners. The recommendation was shared by OutKick, which considers itself as a “data-driven” sports media outlet.

The recommendation was based on a study that was published by Harvard University last June. According to researchers, couples should both consider wearing face masks during sex as a way to prevent the spread of coronavirus. They also encouraged couples to refrain from kissing. They also advised that both partners shower before and after sex and clean up with soap, water, and alcohol.

In another study published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, there seemed to be no clear data to prove other “routes of sexual transmission.” In a small study, researchers were unable to detect the virus in semen or vaginal secretions of patients who were positive for coronavirus. However, in an additional study, experts were able to trace the virus in “semen samples” through a transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Currently, researchers are unable to understand the “relevance” of sexual transmission in COVID-19 patients. Still, experts warned about the possibility that semen can be infectious.

In terms of urine samples, researchers detected traces of the virus in one COVID-19 patient. Despite the lack of information on the matter, they continued to warn “that until this is clarified, urine should also be considered potentially infectious.” Experts also discovered traces of the virus in fecal matter, suggesting that a fecal-oral transmission could be possible. As of now, researchers only limit the transmission to the “oropharynx and respiratory tract.”

To ultimately avoid any risks, the study suggests people avoid sex altogether, adding that “Abstinence is the lowest-risk approach to sexual health during the pandemic.” The study also believes that having sex with the person they are in quarantine with is another safe approach. Couples can also look into other alternatives, such as using telephone or video chat.

Back in April, the Oregon Health Authority also published public service announcements, which immediately went viral. The PSA included graphic emojis that were almost too revealing for some readers. One user even remarked it as the “horniest” public announcement yet.

Even New York City also published a graphic memo warning the public to avoid sex as much as possible.
