In an op-ed published on CNN last week, Joe Lockart, a former press secretary to U.S. President Bill Clinton, gave a piece of advice to presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden- “Don’t debate Trump.”

Lockart warned, “Whatever you do, don’t debate Trump.” The former Democratic Press Secretary explained that it is difficult to win against Trump, given his long history of declaring inaccurate facts that cannot pass fact-checking tests. Lockart continued that according to the Washington Post, Trump had issued more than 20,000 false statements. “It’s a fool’s errand to enter the ring with someone who can’t follow the rules or the truth,” he wrote. Lockart continued, “Biden will undoubtedly take heat from Republicans and the media for skipping the debates.” The former Press secretary added, “But it’s worth the risk as trying to debate someone incapable of telling the truth is an impossible contest to win.”

However, there is more to Lockart’s advice, especially since Biden had gained notoriety for his long list of gaffes, leading Republicans and Democrats to question whether he might be mentally capable of being the nation’s next commander-in-chief.

In fact, Biden himself had issued several misstatements and fabrications. In a 2008 debate with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Democratic nominee issued a bizarre statement that the U.S. and France had successfully “kicked” Hezbollah, a paramilitary group out of Lebanon. On the contrary, the group is still holding ground in Lebanon and was even described as a “major architect” of the country’s new government.

Then in 2012, Biden also issued a series of gaffes in a 2012 debate with then-Rep. Paul Ryan. The former Vice President made a false statement that Obamacare does not require religious institutions to provide contraceptives to their employees. However, such an issue became a forefront of lawsuits that were filed by a Catholic order, the Little Sisters of the Poor, who were forced to pay contraception to their employees despite the fact that it violates their own religious belief.

Back in June, Biden’s campaign team had agreed that the Democratic nominee would join in three debates. However, Democrats feared that Biden’s often lackluster delivery paired with his cognitive decline, might look “frail” against Trump. In a New York Times article, author Thomas Friedman suggested that Biden should not join any debate until they established a real-time fact-checking.

However, even a fact-checking panel might still provide room for error. To point this out, in a 2012 debate with President Barack Obama against Republican challenger Mitt Romney, a CNN moderator, Candy Crowley claimed that Obama was correct when he declared that the Benghazi terror attack was indeed a terror attack. Crowley later apologized for the mistake.

Biden’s cognitive decline had become a serious cause of concern for the Democratic party. In fact, on Sunday, Republican supporter and former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino said that his sources confirmed that the nominee is suffering a rapid “cognitive decline.”

In a Facebook post, Bongino wrote that the former Vice President’s “cognitive decline’ had become difficult to hide and that the Democrats would have to make a decision “soon.”
