Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized the presence of a canonized saint who worked with lepers and who contracted the disease as a sign of white supremacy. She made the shocking claim on Thursday when she made an Instagram story. She was making a virtual tour for her followers on social media. She commented on the historical figures from the 50 states, saying that all the historical figures that were chosen were, white supremacists.

“Even when we select figures to tell the stories of colonized places, it is the colonizers and settlers whose stories are told—and virtually no one else,” AOC said, she pointed out Father Damien who represented Hawaii.

“It’s not Queen Lili’uokalani of Hawaii, the only Queen Regnant of Hawaii, who is immortalized and whose story is told,” she added. “It is Father Damien.”

She pointed out that Father Damien’s statue is a symbol of white supremacy and patriarchy which is dominating society today. AOC is either ignorant as to who Father Damien is or is just a racist who hates everything that is white. Father Damien worked in the leper colony of Hawaii. He cared for the sick Hawaiians at a time when leprosy was still incurable and was a slow death sentence. That was the reason why leper colonies were established back then, to house the lepers as they slowly succumbed to the disease.

Without caring for his own safety, Father Damien cared for lepers and so he contracted the disease himself and died. Because of his selflessness and dedication, he was made a saint.

Most Hawaiians are aware of the importance of Father Damien in the history of the state. In fact, even the Hawaiians at the time of Father Damien appreciated his efforts. Lili’uokalani, the princess during that period made Father Damien a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Kalakaua in 1881. That was in recognition of his efforts to help the less fortunate. But that’s not enough for AOC who considers anything white and male to be evil.

While some Catholics will not agree with AOC’s assessment of Father Damien, others are praising the future of the Catholic Church. A writer for the National Catholic Reporter declared her as such. They claimed that she’s a “rock-star millennial leader of the left” who “grew up Catholic and even wrote about how her faith influences her views on public policies such as mass incarceration, for a Catholic magazine.” One thing that they’re forgetting is that she’s a communist who supports abortion. If she gains power she would probably move to have religions restricted.
