On her media appearance for MSNBC, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand accused President Donald Trump of putting the country behind months of preparation due to his “unwillingness to act and lead.”

During her interview, Gillibrand said that the president would have made better decisions if he had let experts “take charge.” This is despite Trump working alongside top medical experts such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Deborah Birx, who specializes in immunology, vaccine research, and global health.

Gillibrand claimed that the president had made “poor decisions” during the onset of the pandemic by downplaying the seriousness of the virus. The lawmaker also accused Trump of failing to act immediately, even after he had realized its possible impact. She claimed that the administration failed to prepare the necessary resources and suggested that testing should have started back in January.

She continued: “He’s put us behind by months in preparation because of his unwillingness to act and lead. Governors and mayors are doing their best to make up for his lost time.” Gillibrand then used the opportunity to push for her own political agenda, saying that what the country needs right now are “truth-tellers,” implying that the president had been spreading conspiracies and lies in order to downplay the seriousness of the situation. “We need [someone] who can admit the buck stops with them, and that’s not what we’re seeing with this president,” Gillibrand added.

In another MSNBC appearance, the senator also attacked Trump over his previous allegations that there might have been backdoor negotiations that had caused the sudden surge of demand for masks and other medical equipment in New York hospitals.

“Beyond absurd,” Gillibrand said over the president’s allegations. The senator claimed that after she talked with most hospital heads in NYC, she was assured that no such negotiations are taking place. She added that the medical personnel are “the real heroes” for working around the clock to treat patients who have been affected by the virus. Instead, Gillibrand said that the administration should provide more ventilators and personal protective equipment.

Gillibrand also declared that Trump is not the man for the job. She also went on to cite that the president had been trying to “politicize” the situation, believing that he had encouraged bipartisanship and continually spread misinformation. “I’ve never imagined a president would do such a corrosive and dangerous thing,” she added.

While Gillibrand made constant verbal attacks on the administration for its coronavirus response, she had already been throwing accusations against the president since the start of her failed presidential bid.

In fact, during her first official speech as a Democratic nominee, Gillibrand described Trump as a “coward” who had torn down the country’s “moral fabric.” She delivered the vicious statements in front of Trump International Hotel & Tower at the southwest corner of Central Park, one of the president’s signature properties. She also referred to the building as a “shrine” of both vanity and greed.
