National Action Network (NAN), the “charity” run by controversial Rev. Al Sharpton showed in tax filings that they paid CEO Sharpton over $1,000,000 last year alone. The “charity” took in about $7 million in donations last year which means before any other salaries or operating expenses are also taken out, about 15% of the money coming in goes right in Sharpton’s pocket.

The breakdown of Sharpton’s payments looks like this; $324,000 salary, which is over a $100,000 raise from the previous year. A $159,596 bonus and $563,352 in “other compensation”. This other compensation is the result of NAN spending even more money on non-charitable issues to hire an “executive compensation firm” to figure out how much the “charity” had been underpaying Sharpton. They determined he was owed around $1.2 million but he generously agreed to only take $563k.

This was not the first time Sharpton has been accused of bilking his own charity out of money for personal gain. Last year tax filing showed that Sharpton had sold the rights to his life story to NAN for a whopping $531,000.

Taking these liberties with his “charity” has allowed Sharpton to pay off millions of dollars in state and federal tax liens that he owed. Chances are there are more crafty financial maneuvers though because the reverend still owes almost $700,000 in back taxes for 3 other companies he owns.
