n the crowded and uninspiring race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, there have already been multiple frontrunners. It started with Joe Biden, then Kamala Harris, then Elizabeth Warren, and now South Bend, Indiana’s “Mayor Pete” Buttigieg has taken the lead.

It is not surprising that Buttigieg climbed ahead of Biden, whose campaign is sinking like a stone. What is more interesting is that, now that it is getting closer to voting time, voters seem to be turning away from the two unabashed socialist candidates, Warren and Bernie Sanders.

The latest polls in the all-important primary state has Buttigieg at 25%, a stunning 16% jump from September’s polls. This gives the mayor a 9-point lead on Warren and a 10-point lead on Sanders and Biden. Since that same September poll, Biden and Warren dropped 5 and 6-points respectively while Sanders gained 4-points.

These numbers are a result of a huge push in Iowa by the Buttigieg campaign. According to reports, the campaign bought $870,000 worth of TV ads in the state in the week leading up to the poll. With the Iowa caucus still 78-days away there is still plenty of time for Mayor Pete to slip up, another contender to gain ground, or even a new candidate to emerge.
