Texas state Representative Alfonso ‘Poncho’ Nevarez, 47, faces up to 10 years in prison after he dropped an envelope full of cocaine at the Austin, TX airport. The envelope, which has official state letterhead printed on it, contained multiple bags of cocaine and was found by airport employees laying on the ground. When security tapes were reviewed, they showed Nevarez dropping it without knowing while getting into a car after returning to the airport in a private jet owned by his law firm.

The Texas Democratic Party issued a statement saying, “Addiction is a serious issue and its important for people to access the help they need moving forward. Rep. Nevarez is taking responsibility and seeking the help he needs. We wish the best to him and his family during his recovery.”

In his own statement, Nevarez did not say if he is considering stepping down from his position is the state legislature although he has previously announced he will not be running for reelection in 2020. On social media, he has closed his Facebook page because Facebook is “not interested in the truth”, but continues to operate his twitter where he mostly retweets messages of support and criticizes the Trump Administration.
