Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti resigned on Friday to take a new position working for radical non-profit called New Consensus to promote the Green New Deal. Ocasio-Cortez’s director of communications Corbin Trent will be leaving her office as well. Trent will be taking a job working for communications for AOC’s 2020 re-election campaign.

According the New York Post, Chakrabarti, the mastermind behind AOC’s campaign, is currently being investigated for finance misdeeds. A complaint was filed with the Federal Election Commission in March against Chakrabarti for alleged violations having to do with illegal fundraising.

The two PACs being probed, Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats, were both set up by Chakrabarti to support progressive candidates across the country.

But they funneled more than $1 million in political donations into two private companies that Chakrabarti also incorporated and controlled, according to Federal Election Commission filings and a complaint filed in March with the regulatory agency.

In 2016 and 2017, the PACs raised about $3.3 million, mostly from small donors. A third of the cash was transferred to two private companies whose names are similar to one of the PACs — Brand New Congress LLC and Brand New Campaign LLC — federal campaign filings show. - New York Post

In March, the Washington Examiner reported:

The cash transfers from the PACs — overseen by Saikat Chakrabarti, the freshman socialist Democrat’s chief of staff — run counter to her pledges to increase transparency and reduce the influence of “dark money” in politics.

Chakrabarti’s companies appear to have been set up for the sole purpose of obscuring how the political donations were used. The arrangement skirted reporting requirements and may have violated the $5,000 limit on contributions from federal PACs to candidates, according to the complaint filed by the National Legal and Policy Center, a government watchdog group. -Washington Examiner

Chakrabarti took a huge pay cut this year, with an income of $80,000, while the average pay for job is $146,830. Because his salary was below $126,000, Chakrabarti did not have to disclose his outside income. Now, the mastermind is under investigation.

AOC’s former chief of staff stirred the post often during his tenure, causing a clash between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez.

In early July, Chakrabarti tweeted,”Pelosi claims we can’t focus on impeachment because it’s a distraction from kitchen table issues. But I’d challenge you to find voters that can name a single thing House Democrats have done for their kitchen table this year. What is this legislative mastermind doing? All these articles want to claim what a legislative mastermind Pelosi is, but I’m seeing way more strategic smarts from freshman members like @AOC, @IlhanMN , @RashidaTlai and @AyannaPressley. Pelosi is just mad that she got outmaneuvered (again) by Republicans.”

In another tweet, which was deleted, Chakrabarti wrote that the Democrats “certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s.”
