Last week, members of Berkeley City Council decided that the words “he” and “she” will be replaced with the word “they.” “Sister” will be called “sibling.” “Manhole” will be substituted with “maintenance hole” and “manpower” will be now be called “workforce.”

Berkeley City Council unanimously voted to pass the measure to replace over two dozen commonly used words in an effort to be more inclusive. Riguel Robinson, a 23-year-old graduate of the University of California and city council member, was the sponsor of the ordinance. Robinson said his years in college made him more aware of gender issues.

Robinson stated, “Gender-neutral language creates a lot of room to acknowledge that it’s not just men running the country.”

The new updates on city forms will cost $600 according to officials.
