On Wednesday night, rioters set fire to a Trump flag, and a severed pig’s head in Portland, while the city continues to deal with more than 70 days of constant riots.

In a report from a Local television station KGW, rioters had burned down flags, and a pig’s head in a call to abolish both the country’s police force and its prison systems. During the confrontation, rioters also threatened and injured law enforcement officers with debris, including rocks, frozen water bottles, fireworks, and even a can of paint.

The media outlet reported that rioters are calling out to abolish, not just the police but as well as the prison systems. While several abolitionist movements were already established In Portland before the death of an African-American man, George Floyd, his death gave protesters the opportunity to pursue their agenda. According to GQ magazine, prison abolitionists’ argue that “ it is not enough to simply reform our current criminal justice system—that it must be completely dismantled and, in its place, society must invest in communities and address harm in other ways.”

In another observation by independent journalist Garrison Davis, he reported that initially, a crowd of 400 people was gathered at Chapman Square near the Justice Center. Most of the attendees were standing up and listening to speeches. Then around 10:40 p.m, around 150 to 200 members of the said crows walked into the federal courthouse. They also targeted the officers by launching fireworks and starting a fire outside of the building.

The incident was one of the several riots that have taken place in the city. Just this week, police officers had to fire tear gas against protesters. Initially, officers issued a stern warning to disperse. Using a loudspeaker, the authorities plead to put an end to criminal behavior. However, when the crowd failed to follow the instruction, officers showed up in their riot gear and began throwing tear gas.

Currently, protests in the city were divided into two, one which advocates for police and violent free events, while another group continued to burn down and destroy federal properties. In a statement from Black hip-hop artist and activist, Edreece Phillips, he believed that protests are a way to “rebuild” rather than to cause harm and “destruction. Phillips also called out anarchists as “‘opportunists” for using the political movement to instigate violence.

On Wednesday, Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell issued a press conference, where he expressed his growing anger and frustrations against the riots. Lovell stated that rioters do not help further their cause and provide better outcomes for people of color by using violence. In fact, Lovell believed that the violence had robbed what used to be a powerful movement.

Moreover, a growing number of Portland residents also expressed their growing anger over the violent riots that had taken place in the suburbs.
