President Trump and First Lady Melania made their first official visit to India on Monday. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed them as they emerged from Air Force One by greeting President Trump with a hug. A crowd of people, dancers dressed in elaborate garb, and drum players were also there to show their support and welcome the president and first lady.

Over 100,000 people, all wearing white hats emblazoned with “Namaste Trump” came to see President Trump at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera. 150,000 people showed up, but the stadium could only hold 110,000.

“Namaste, Trump! Namaste, Trump!” the crowd cheered, repeating after Prime Minister Modi.

“Trump’s visit is a new chapter in the relationship between the U.S. and India, a chapter that will document the progress and prosperity of Americans and Indians,” Modi said in Hindi.

Trump bgan his 27-minute long speech, by greeting the cheering crowd with “Namaste.”

“Namaste. And hello to India. This is such a great honor. Let me begin by expressing my profound gratitude to an exceptional leader, a great champion of India, a man who works night and day for his country, and a man I am proud to call my true friend: Prime Minister Modi,” said President Trump.

“America loves India, America respects India, and America will always be faithful and loyal friends to the Indian people,” President Trump announced.

“From this day on, India will always hold a very special place in our hearts,” he added.

He noted India’s economy, Modi’s humble beginnings as a tea selller’s son to his landslide victory in the 2019 election.

“Prime Minister Modi, you are not just the pride of Gujarat, you are living proof that with hard work and devotion, Indians can accomplish anything, anything at all, anything they want,” Trump said. “The Prime Minister has a moving story of an incredible rise, and so does this entire nation.”
