Representative Elijah Cummings died early Thursday morning of “complications concerning longstanding health challenges” at  Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Baltimore congressman represented Maryland’s 7th district since 1996, and held the position as Chairman of House Oversight and Reform Committee. Cummings was one of the chief Democrats that led the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

Cummings’ seat was vacant for several weeks while he was out sick. His passing came as a shock to many, because it was not known that the congressman was under hospice care.

Last July, Cummings and President Trump made headlines after they bickered with each other when Trump called his congressional district “rat and rodent infested.”

Thursday morning, the President set aside his differences with Cummings and tweeted, “My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!”
