In what is turning out to be a massive breach in security, the Twitter accounts of Joe Biden and Obama appear to have been hacked. This took place on Wednesday afternoon. The hackers posted some bitcoin offers, and it seems that the attackers were targeting high-profile individuals.

“I am giving back to the community. All bitcoin sent to the address below will be sent back doubled! If you send $1,000, I will send back $2,000.” That was the tweet that was posted on the former vice president’s Twitter account before it was deleted. A similar tweet appeared on Obama’s account.

Other prominent people were also targeted, including Mike Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Kanye West. Even official accounts of companies were not safe as Uber became a victim too. The link on the tweets, which is a bitcoin link, received $100,000 during the short time that it has been posted. This is one of the most serious cybersecurity breaches since it might involve powerful individuals.

Twitter has released a statement through its spokesperson Aly Pavela. She said that they are fully aware of the break-in. While the hacking was relatively harmless and only a bit inconvenient, it is making security experts very uneasy. The hackers could have caused so much more damage and confusion. Also, it is highly unlikely that they pulled off such a massive operation like that only to get bitcoin, which amounted to just $100,000. That seems too small when compared to what they could have made if they asked for more. Experts are now wondering if the hackers were just out to prove a point, and they are so confident about their capabilities that they are showing off.

Some have blamed North Korea, Russia, or China for the attack, although there are those who believe that the attacker might just be an individual. If it was an operation backed by a government, the culprits might have targeted something bigger, like causing panic in the stock market or something similar.

Security experts have pointed out that the breach has been made possible because of a flaw in Twitter’s system. It was not caused by individuals who may have been affected by being negligent. The problem started on Twitter’s end somehow.
