On Monday, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender and Vice President Andrea Jenkins over calls to defund and dismantle the Minneapolis police force.

During the interview, the show’s host asked how they can address public safety by dismantling the police force, and what are its implications for the safety of the community. The City Council President responded that “our community is ready to reimagine public safety from the ground up to think holistically and to make sure every single member of our community is safe.”

However, the host remained unsatisfied with Bender’s response, and the lack of concrete solutions for public safety.“What happens if there is a criminal out there with a gun and starts shooting people?” Blitzer pointedly asked. “Who will respond if there’s no police force?” the host added.

Bender responded that it had become their “top priority” to ensure that all members of their community are safe. She pointed out that for over 150 years since the Minneapolis police department has been established, their model of law enforcement was not working. With that, Bender suggested that they should invite the whole community as she went on to call all the nine members of the Minneapolis city council; to make a “commitment.”

However, Bender admitted that they do not have feasible plans, nor solutions to stop the crime ad violence. “We don’t have all the answers and what we committed to was a community process to help reimagine public safety,” she said. The City Council President also added that they still continue to have a police department.

Moreover, Bender claimed that their research, such as looking into the main reasons for the 911 calls, had laid the groundwork for ‘incremental change”. With this, the City Council President believed that it was enough to dismantle the police force.

Bender told Blitz that, “You know, I think, again, community trust in this existing department is so low that there is an urgent need for change now,” and citing the law enforcement’s “pattern of racial discrimination.” Finally, she concluded that “it’s clear that we need to dismantle this department.”

Democrats, along with other Hollywood stars, have advocated for the defunding and dismantling of the police force, as countless celebrities joined in on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) rallies over the weekend.

Stars, such as Madonna, chimed in with the protests in London while walking on crutches as a result of her previous injuries. Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner came with her husband, Joe Jonas. Turner, who was clearly pregnant, carried a BLM sign.
