Controversial anthem-kneeling former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick may be taking the first step to get back into the NFL thanks to a league sponsored workout session in Atlanta. The NFL sent a memo to all 32 NFL teams and invited them to come on Saturday to watch a workout and interview session they are hosting for the former San Francisco 49er.

In the memo sent to teams, the NFL stated “Earlier this year, we discussed some possible steps with [Kaepernick’s] representatives, and they recently emphasized his level of preparation and that he is ready to work out for clubs and be interviewed by them. We have therefore arranged this opportunity for him to work out, and for all clubs to have the opportunity to evaluate his current readiness and level of interest in resuming his NFL career.”

While not implicitly stated, this workout seems to be the direct result of the collusion grievance filed by Kaepernick and former teammate and anthem-kneeler, Eric Reid. It is highly unusual for the League to host a workout for an individual player. Trying out players to fill in during the season for injured players is almost always conducted by each team individually.

Kaepernick has not suited up for an NFL game since 2016. played at all since 2016. In his final season in the league he threw 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions for the 49ers. While that team was one of the worst teams in the league that year, Kaepernick did help San Francisco reach the 2012Super Bowl XLVII when he replaced quarterback Alex Smith halfway through the season after Smith suffered a concussion.
